Dear Excellencies Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives to the UN,
On behalf of the Timor-Leste civil society and especially the network of the women’s movement (Rede Feto), we are very pleased to provide our support to Ms. Maria Helena “Milena” Lopes de Jesus Pires to be elected to the CEDAW committee.
Ms. Pires has demonstrated her commitment to the advancement of women rights in Timor-Leste and has motivated young women to be self-confident and independent through her dedication of the women’s movement. Ms. Pires is one of the founders of the women’s network, Rede Feto, in Timor-Leste. She was a member of Timor-Leste’s Constituent Assembly, who produced the nation’s first Constitution, and is the only Timorense person who has led a UN agency, UNIFEM in Timor Leste. During her assignment as a Country Director of UNIFEM, she has worked hard and made an important contribution in two key areas; the implementation of CEDAW and women’s participation in politics. Ms. Pires commitment has contributed to tangible changes in all aspects of women’s lived here. With her expertise we belived that she will contribute to well-being of women at the regional and international level.
For the success of her candidature, we need the support of all states around the world.
Your vote will make a difference and contribute to the well-being of women worldwide, especially women in developing countries.
Please vote for Timor-Leste!!!
With solidarity,
Ivete de Oliveira
